Sister Aurora has recently been transferred to Bangui where her task and ambition consists in transforming the local dispensary into a functioning health care center, especially for young mothers and their children. Providing medical care, pre-maternal assistance, and a clean, safe environment for giving birth is her most profound and heartfelt aspiration.

According to statistics, 43% of children in Bangui die before reaching the age of 5. It is thus our intention to focus on the dispensary aiding during the first years of childhood.

Current situation

The external structure of the dispensary is kept quite well. But a lot must be done to renovate the interior and to make it function. They are short of almost everything: beds, matrasses (at least 30), solar panels for electricity, fences to protect the property from intruders, mosquito nets at least for the baby cots to protect against malaria.

Extensive financial help is needed to provide for all this.
On top of rooms needing renovation, we have a long list of equipment required for diagnostics and medical treatment, allowing for the best possible health care assistance for the young women and their infants.
Sister Aurora is already working together with a nurse, a medical doctor and a handicraftsman looking after basic maintenance.

It is our aim to raise enough funds to purchase the necessary equipment on site through Sister Aurora, and to restore the dispensary thanks to the contribution of every single one of us.

We calculated a total need of 27’000 CHF to be invested as follows:

13’540 CHF

Canteen project

5’172 CHF

Diagnostic and intervention equipment (solar panels, oxygen dispensers, basic medicines, etc.)

4’486 CHF

Restoration of water and electrical systems, beds, mattresses etc.

3’881 CHF

Examination and hospitalization equipment (hospital beds, gynaecological bed, stethoscope etc.)

Subdividing the purchase of the equipment into four smaller objectives will allow us to honor and praise every single goal achieved together with Sister Aurora, the mothers, and their children.
We are confident to be able to celebrate the accomplishment of this significant project soon, with the help of and thanks to everyone.

Where is Bangui?

Bangui is the capital of the Central African Republic. Surrounded by dense tropical forest, it extends along the Ubangi River and is the only significant town by size of the region.
The vicinity to the river makes the city subject to frequent floods, with the river tripling its flow during the rainy season.
Bangui lives in a permanent state of health emergency, with the average age of its population being 18 years.

Who is Sister Aurora?

Sister Aurora Marci was born as Catherina on February 3, 1941 in Tertenia, a small village in the Sardinian province of Nuoro, hidden between hills but only a stone’s throw away from the wonderful sea. Being the eleventh (and last!) child of Ruggero and Aurora, she spent a serene time of childhood and teenage years between helping the family, working for the local tobacco shop and catholic action. At the age of 20, she finally made her biggest wish come true: starting “a new life” as a postulant in a convent.
In September 1963, she officially took the vows in the Order of the Daughters of St Joseph, and changed her name into Aurora, in honor of her mother. She likes to specify that she has become Jesus’s Bride, and from that time on she dedicated herself to the people, and in particular, to children in early infancy and day care centers or orphanages, and moved around Sardinia, Tuscany and even Arlesheim (Basle) in Switzerland over the years.
However, another desire was growing stronger: being a missionary and helping the “poor forgotten souls” of the world. So, on September 8, 1988, she departs for her first mission to Zongo, then Belgian Congo and has ever since moved around Central Africa providing instruction and health care to “her” children and families in need, facing a thousand challenges with great courage. She personally cared for raising funds for her little projects from family and friends every time she went back to Italy.
Now has come the time for the final milestone marking her long life. It is an ambitious project requiring a strong team! She asked for our help, and we are thrilled to support her in achieving her goal.

By today, the association “Una goccia nel mare” has donated 27.000 CHF to Sister Aurora and the dispensary in Bangui. The donations were used to restore hydraulic and electrical plants, to repair bathrooms and showers, and windows have been opened. They bought 20 matrasses, and beds with bedside drawers could be set up. Salaries for 5 months were paid to medical and maintenance personnel; medical emergency equipment was purchased and medicines together with meals were given to children suffering from malnutrition. Thanks to our help, Sister Aurora has awakened the dispensary in Bangui to new life.

Since it is impossible to obtain equipment for radiological diagnosis in Bangui, we have decided to donate the money collected for the food emergency.

With Sister Aurora, the Canteen project will have a great response and, above all, immediate help for malnourished children!
