Story
Children’s Home for Orphans at Silveira Hospital in Zimbabwe was built in 2008 for 16 orphans. The electricity for running the children’s home is generated by solar panels. Old lead-acid batteries no longer work and must be replaced by special solar batteries. These cost 9850 CHF
Goal
Our aim is to give some of Zimbabwe’s many orphans a chance at survival and a future. The focus is on the right to life and education and the healthy development of every child.

Current situation
A major investment is needed to ensure continuous operation of the children’s home with solar energy. The batteries need to be replaced and should therefore last 10 years. This investment is a completed project with no follow-up costs.
Numbers
In Zimbabwe this orphanage takes care of 25 children and adolescents in foster families and 10 young children in the orphanage.
In the Bikita district with 120,000 inhabitants, it is the only orphanage.
They work well with the local social authority but no financial aid is given by the state.
Observations
From 2011 to 2014 Dr. Clemens Fehr was a Solidarmed doctor at the Silveira hospital and after the death of his wife in 2013 he took care of the orphanage alone until 2015 and is now treasurer of the Amici di Silveira association and happy to provide further information. He last visited the orphanage in March 2022 and personally verified that the project is running successfully and well managed!
