In 2009, Michel Monnier, a Valaisian doctor, opened a clinic in the mountains of Lesotho in southern Africa to provide medical care to patients in remote mountain villages.
His wife Jacky Monnier is the soul of the project, coordinating and looking after the finances after her death in 2018.
The goal is to ensure medical care in the vicinity of the Mashai Clinic.
The clinic is located at 2200m altitude, 3 small buildings for the doctor’s office and a small apartment for the employees. No electricity and almost no water in winter when temperatures are below freezing. The roads are bad and passable only with 4 x 4 vehicles. The nearest hospital can be reached in 2 hours by car and it takes 7 hours to reach the capital, Maseru.
The team consists of a nurse, an assistant nurse, an assistant and a driver. The doctor is in charge of the clinic. On Mondays and Fridays are consultation hours in the clinic, from Tuesday to Thursday they leave every morning in one of the 5 external stations, 1-2 hours by car with all the material in the box. They see 50-240 patients per day. Treatment and medication are free.
Donate 3000 chf to co-finance the urgent purchase of an additional 4×4 vehicle, used for about 4 years with a raised chassis and additional shock absorbers as the 2 previous cars are 17 and 12 years old and are often defective.
